MCHS Surrender Policy

Marion County Humane Society does accept dogs and cats from Marion County for re-homing, on a case by case basis. Our surrender fee is $50 per pet, if it is already altered and up to date on vaccinations.  If the accpeted pet is unaltered and not current on its required vaccinations the surrender fee is $100.  You must call the shelter first at 641-828-7387, before any animal is brought in.

When space allows we will accept dogs and cats from outside of Marion County, with a surrender fee of $100/$200 respectively. There is no maximum fee for litters from outside of Marion County.

If you are interested in surrendering your pet, it is required that you call the shelter to discuss your situation and set up an appointment.

Why do you charge a surrender fee?

It is very costly to provide medical and ongoing care for the animals at MCHS. We ask surrendering families to take responsibility for their pet by contributing a small portion of that cost. Each pet costs an average of $90 in immediate medical treatments including vaccinations and spay/neuter from the moment they are brought to us, not including ongoing care. If a pet becomes ill, costs for treatment can range from $50-$1,000. Additional costs include building utilities and maintenece, food, staff to care for the animals daily, and cleaning supplies.

Why do you charge a higher surrender fee for animals outside of Marion County?

The cost of care provided to animals from within Marion County is subsidised by grant funding and private donations. Because we do not regularly receive animals from outside of Marion County it is difficult for us to acquire funds from foundations and donors in other counties.
